How to actually study

Short, interactive lessons on the memory science that drives every mode in this app. Each ends with a one-question check.

Lesson 1

Why spaced repetition works

Forgetting follows a curve. Spaced reviews compress it. This is the foundation of every mode in mneme.

The forgetting curve

Ebbinghaus showed memories decay roughly exponentially. Without review, most new facts are gone within a week.

Lesson 2

Interleave, don't block

Mixing topics within a session feels harder than studying one topic at a time - and that's the point.

Blocked practice

Drilling all the photosynthesis cards back-to-back feels fluent. But fluency is shallow: you're reading off a primed buffer, not retrieving.

Lesson 3

How mneme's scheduler decides what's due

The interval between reviews grows each time you grade 'good' or 'easy'; it resets each time you grade 'again'.

Ease + interval

Each card has an ease factor (how easy you find it). Grading 'easy' bumps ease up; 'again' pushes it down. The next interval = interval * ease, modulated by your grade.

Lesson 4

Retrieval > recognition

Free recall is harder than picking from a menu, and the harder it is to retrieve, the stronger the memory becomes.

The hierarchy

Recognition (Quiz) < cued recall (Cloze) < free recall (Write). Each mode trains a different memory strength.

Putting it together

Your weekly recipe

  • Daily quick Flip on what's due. Honest grading.
  • Twice a week: Quiz or Cloze for variation.
  • Once a week: Write or Tutor on your weakest tag.
  • Test mode 3-5 days before the exam, again on the day before.
